H2S Gas Detection Easily Integrated into Existing OleumTech OTC Network

A major oil producer in South Texas sought a cost-effective H2S detection solution for retrofitting their well pads. Their existing standalone system provided basic local detection but lacked integration with their SCADA system, limiting overall safety and insight.

Pre-Existing Infrastructure

The OleumTech Wireless Sensor & I/O Network, part of the OTC Platform, had already been deployed at the site to monitor critical tank levels. With the infrastructure in place, including the OleumTech DH3 Wireless Gateway capable of bringing in over 60 transmitters, economies of scale could be maximized by just the incremental cost of wireless transmitters and sensors. The Gateway collected the data from all transmitters and interfaced with the local RTU via Modbus.

Pilot Install Equipment

For the pilot installation, the producer selected three OleumTech Wireless H2S Transmitters, recognizing their ease of deployment, low cost, and high-performance capabilities. Notably, the self-contained, battery-powered design boasts a lifespan of up to five years without the need for battery replacement.

Installation Process

The operator quickly updated the site’s OleumTech BreeZ project file, then updated the H2S transmitters and Gateway using a laptop computer. With the equipment configured, once the transmitters were within RF Range, they automatically joined the OleumTech Network.

Calibration

The H2S Transmitters were calibrated in the field using a bump test attachment kit provided by OleumTech. A 50 ppm shot of H2S was utilized, and the high and high-high alarms were set at 10 and 20 ppm, respectively, to meet the producer’s desired alarm thresholds.

Over-the-Air Configuration

Once operational, the system allowed for configuration changes to be pushed out wirelessly, using OleumTech’s Over-the-Air (OTA) feature. This feature enables users to make changes remotely, while limiting human exposure to hazardous conditions.

Mounting System

The H2S Transmitters were mounted on a portable PVC pipe solution, positioned no more than 2 feet off the ground. This strategic placement effectively monitored H2S gas presence.

Results

The producer commented on how remarkably efficient the installation was and now has site visibility 24/7/365 through the SCADA system with live incoming data. Impressed by the economies of scale, installation efficiency, and quality of real time data, the producer now plans to upgrade other sites with the OleumTech solution.
