Fuel Gas and Air Flow Measurement to Control Industrial Burners and Furnaces

18 Apr 2024  |
Achieve precise industrial burner control and energy efficiency with ABB's thermal mass flowmeters.

Introduction

Controlling the fuel gas to air ratio of your industrial burner, steam generator or process heater represents a key fact to make the operation energy efficient and ensure the quality of your product.

Application

The application is sensitive and highly accurate measurement of fuel gas, e.g. natural gas or hydrogen, and air flow under low pressure conditions. The challenge Optimization of the combustion control is one of the most important ways to make the operation of your industrial burner more energy efficient. By sensitively and accurately measuring the flow rates of fuel gas and air to the burner an optimal fuel to air ratio can be achieved even under varying process conditions. In this way fuel consumption can be reduced, which will also reduce your energy costs. At the same time the environmental impact will be lower and the quality of your product better because the product temperature can be controlled precisely over the whole process duration.

The solution

Common applications for thermal mass flowmeters will be found in fuel gas and air feed lines in industries like glass manufacturing, aluminum and steel production, pulp and paper, power, chemical and petrochemical due to their sensitive and accurate mass flow measuring capabilities, wide measuring dynamics and their maintenance friendly and robust design.

Thermal mass flowmeters measure the mass of streaming gas directly. There is no need to install additional temperature and pressure transmitters to compensate the measurement in order to achieve a flow indication in normalized volume units. No moving parts ensure a maintenance friendly installation and the pressure loss created by the obstruction in the line is negligible.

ABB’s solution

ABB’s thermal mass flowmeter, the SensyMaster FMT230/250 and FMT430/450 offer an extremely wide measuring range of up to 1:150 is a result of the advanced sensor technology and full digital signal processing. Measurement down to virtually zero is possible. Market outperforming accuracy and the fast response time of less than 0.5 seconds accel the process further.

The integrated design offers an illuminated graphical display with intuitive menu handling, through the glass operation and various communication options like HART, Modbus or Profibus DP. It has a totalizer inbuilt and features gas temperature measurement. For difficult to reach installation spots a remote design is available, too.

ABB SensyMaster meters are easy to install. They combine with pipeline matching pipe components that ensure a perfect and repeatable alinement of the meter by a centering pin and can be equipped with ball valves, or integrated flow straighteners for limited installation space.

The ABB Application Configurator allows to adapt the meter to changing process conditions. In case the composition of the gas changes the meter can be adapted on site without recalibration. A total number of 8 applications with different gases, pipe diameters and measuring ranges can be stored in one meter and make it suitable for the use in numerous installations.

In terms of Diagnosis ABB offers a VeriMass SensorCheck functionality which delivers information about the integrity of the sensor elements without removing the meter from the process. In combination with numerous diagnostic values which can be configured to trigger warnings or alarm signals process control is made safer.
