Problem
An international airport in the Middle East monitors sewage water sent to a treatment station with an electromagnetic flow meter. However, they have complained about inaccurate readings. When the electromagnetic manufacturer service representative visited the airport, they found the liner damaged, which meant the meters had to be replaced with an alternative lining material. To replace the meter, the airport would have to shut down the line, drain the fluid, rent a crane, swap out meters, and then place the new electromagnetic flow meter into service. The overall replacement cost goes well beyond the cost of the meter, but also includes all costs associated with loss of the line for at least one full day.
Application

Benefits
- Reliable, accurate flow measurement
- No process interruption
- Installs on the outside of the pipe
- Extremely cost-effective solution
Solution
This specific airport already had an AquaTrans AT600 clamp-on Panametrics ultrasonic flowmeter installed in their chiller plant working to their satisfaction. The airport was apprehensive about a clamp-on for this sewage water application, as the water contained 5% solids by volume. However, they installed a new AquaTrans meter as a trial for this application since it could be installed immediately without interrupting the line. After the trial, the customer was more than satisfied with the stability and accuracy of the meter and will be installing more meters at this site in the future.
