Mass Flow Meters
Mass Flow Meters
Mass Flow Meters, also known as an inertial flow meters, are devices that measure mass flow rates of a fluid traveling through a tube. The mass flow rate is the mass of the fluid traveling past a fixed point per unit time. The mass flow meter does not measure the volume per unit time (e.g., cubic meters per second) passing through the device; it measures the mass per unit time (e.g., kilograms per second) flowing through the device. Volumetric flow rate is the mass flow rate divided by the fluid density. If the density is constant, then the relationship is simple. If the fluid has varying density, then the relationship is not simple. The density of the fluid may change with temperature, pressure, or composition, for example. The fluid may also be a combination of phases such as a fluid with entrained bubbles. Actual density can be determined due to dependency of sound velocity on the controlled liquid concentration.

Ultrasonic Flow Meters
Ultrasonic Flow Meters
Ultrasonic flow meters are types of flow meters that measure the velocity of a fluid with ultrasound to calculate volume flow. Using ultrasonic transducers, these flow meters can measure the average velocity along the path of an emitted beam of ultrasound, by averaging the difference in measured transit time between the pulses of ultrasound propagating into and against the direction of the flow or by measuring the frequency shift from the Doppler effect. Ultrasonic flow meters are affected by the acoustic properties of the fluid and can be impacted by temperature, density, viscosity and suspended particulates depending on the exact flow meter.

Cyclonic Flow Meters
Cyclonic Flow Meters
Cyclonic Flow Meters – Detection of the flow of a fluid, and also measurement of the flow of a fluid, is provided by feeding the fluid flow through a cylindrical chamber to form a cyclonic circulation of the fluid in the chamber. A movable member is moved by the fluid flow. As one example a ball rotates around the inside of the chamber and the passage of the ball detected, at a particular position. An alternative is an annular member also rotated. There can be an optical detection or electronic detection. Output signal can be generated by the movement. Such signals can be processed to give flow rates. The chamber is positioned in a by-pass flow line, with the flow rate of the by-pass related to the total flow.

Variable Area Flow Meters
Variable Area Flow Meters
Variable Area Flow Meters are meters that measure fluid flow by allowing the cross sectional area of the device to vary in response to the flow, causing some measurable effect that indicates the rate. Rotameters are an example of Variable Area Flow Meters, where a weighted “float” rises in a tapered tube as the flow rate increases; the float stops rising when area between float and tube is large enough that the weight of the float is balanced by the drag of fluid flow. Variable Area Flow Meters are a cost effective solution for almost all applications involving the measurement of industrial process liquids, gases or steam. Variable Area Flow Meters are an ideal solution for high purity or corrosive liquid applications, gas and liquid applications, remediation.

Vortex Flow Meters
Vortex Flow Meters
Vortex Flow Meters are used for measuring the flow velocity of gases and liquids in pipelines flowing full. The measuring principle is based on the development of a Karman vortex shedding street in the wake of a body built into the pipeline. The periodic shedding of eddies occurs first from one side and then from the other side of a bluff body (vortex-shedding body) installed perpendicular to the pipe axis. Vortex shedding generates a so-called “Karman vortex street” with alternating pressure conditions whose frequency is proportional to the flow velocity. In some cases, Vortex Flow Meters require the use of straightening vanes or straight upstream piping to eliminate distorted flow patterns and swirl. Low flowrates present a problem for Vortex Flow Meters, because they generate vortices irregularly under low flow conditions. The accuracy of vortex meters is from medium to high, depending on model and manufacturer. In addition to liquid and gas flow measurement, vortex flowmeters are widely used to measure steam flow.

Electromagnetic Flow Meters
Electromagnetic Flow Meters
Electromagnetic Flow Meters provide precise flow measurements with no moving parts, industrial design to accommodate many materials. Electromagnetic Flow Meters use Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction to determine the flow of liquid in a pipe. In an Electromagnetic Flow Meter, a magnetic field is generated and channeled into the liquid flowing through the pipe. Following Faraday’s Law, flow of a conductive liquid through the magnetic field will cause a voltage signal to be sensed by electrodes located on the flow tube walls. When the fluid moves faster, more voltage is generated. Faraday’s Law states that the voltage generated is proportional to the movement of the flowing liquid. The electronic transmitter processes the voltage signal to determine liquid flow. In contrast with many other flowmeter technologies, magnetic flowmeter technology produces signals that are linear with flow. As such, the turndown associated with magnetic flowmeters can approach 20:1 or better without sacrificing accuracy.

Flow Controllers
Flow Controllers
Flow Controllers also known as Mass Flow Controllers provide precision in the feedback control of fluids. Mass Flow Controllers (MFC) are devices used to measure and control the flow of liquids and gases. A mass flow controller is designed and calibrated to control a specific type of liquid or gas at a particular range of flow rates. The MFC can be given a setpoint from 0 to 100% of its full scale range but is typically operated in the 10 to 90% of full scale where the best accuracy is achieved. The device will then control the rate of flow to the given setpoint. MFCs can be either analog or digital. A digital flow controller is usually able to control more than one type of fluid whereas an analog controller is limited to the fluid for which it was calibrated.

Turbine Flow Meters
Turbine Flow Meters
Turbine flow meters place a free-spinning rotor in the flow and count its revolutions, which are proportional to volumetric flow rate over a wide, well-defined range. They are compact, accurate and inexpensive for clean, low-viscosity liquids and gases, and are widely used in fuel transfer, water distribution and test rigs. Coriolis Mass Flow Meters
Coriolis Mass Flow Meters
Coriolis mass flow meters measure mass directly rather than volume, by vibrating a tube and detecting the phase shift the flowing fluid induces in it. Because the reading does not depend on temperature, pressure, viscosity or flow profile, and density comes free from the same measurement, they are the reference instrument for custody transfer, dosing and batching of liquids and gases. Calibration Services
Calibration Services
Calibration services verify that a flow meter, transmitter or sensor still reads what it should, against a reference traceable to a national standard. Accredited laboratories issue a certificate stating the deviation found and the uncertainty of the test, which is what auditors, custody transfer contracts and quality systems such as ISO 9001 ask for. On-site calibration avoids removing the instrument from the line. Find providers of calibration services in our Equipment Guide.

Clamp-on sensors are specially designed for non-intrusive flow measurement. In these situations, pipes cannot be dewatered or the drilling of pipes is not feasible.

Positive Displacement Flow Meters
Positive Displacement Flow Meters
Positive displacement flow meters measure volume directly, by trapping a fixed quantity of liquid in a chamber and counting how many times that chamber fills and empties. Oval gear, nutating disc, oscillating piston and rotary vane designs all work this way. Because accuracy does not depend on the flow profile, they suit viscous liquids, low flow rates and custody transfer of fuels, oils and chemicals.
