The Simple Logic of CorroLogic® VpCI® Engineered Solutions for Oil and Gas Corrosion

8 Jan 2020  |
Cortec® has recently updated its CorroLogic® brochure to provide a clearer look at VpCI® engineered solutions for corrosion in the oil and gas industry.

These solutions focus on four key aspects:

  • Aboveground Storage Tanks (AST)
  • Cased Pipeline Crossings
  • Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI)
  • Pigging & Pipeline Protection

The CorroLogic® system for ASTs includes Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI/VpCI®) in several different forms to allow application to new or existing tanks.  A growing number of oil and gas companies are already embracing this system to protect AST bottoms from corrosion. Protection is achieved by filling interstitial spaces under tank bottoms with Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors that protect difficult-to reach surfaces. CorroLogic® can be applied alone or used to supplement cathodic protection for increased overall corrosion inhibition.

Cased pipeline crossings are another challenging area of corrosion protection for the oil and gas industry. For this application, Cortec® has invented the patented CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler, consisting of two components that form a corrosion-inhibiting gel when injected into pipeline casings or other tubular void spaces. This multi-phase package of corrosion inhibitors is designed to migrate under disbonded coatings, form a protective molecular layer in void spaces, and inhibit corrosion even in the presence of moisture. It has been used by major pipeline companies in North America and Saudi Arabia and is compatible with cathodic protection. CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler is a good alternative to wax or petrolatum-based fillers in terms of corrosion protection and the environment (CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler has a lower environmental impact in case of leakage).

CorroLogic® engineered solutions can also be used to mitigate corrosion under insulation (CUI) on pipes—an ongoing challenge for industrial facilities. CorroLogic® CUI Inhibitor can be injected into new or existing insulation on pipes experiencing temperatures up to 338 °F (170 °C), while CorroLogic® CUI High-Temp Inhibitor can be applied to insulation that will be wrapped around clean pipes reaching up to 1100 °F (600 °C). Brochure updates include technical data showing how these products reduced corrosion during testing at California State University, Northridge.

The brochure also includes several corrosion solutions for pigging and/or pipeline protection. Two of these—VpCI®-637 TOL and VpCI®-629—combine vapor phase and film forming corrosion inhibitors to protect areas not in direct contact with the treated solution. Another option, VpCI®-639, offers oil-soluble, water dispersible, fast acting long-term corrosion inhibitors that form a persistent film barrier for protection in multiple field applications. When it comes to inhibiting corrosion in the oil and gas industry, CorroLogic® makes the solutions clear and logical.
