Leveraging Real-Time Monitoring for Industrial Wastewater Management

When industrial growth within the Metropolitan Municipality of Kocaeli, northwest Turkey, placed significant strain on the existing sewage networks, the municipality faced increasing pressure to monitor and control the quality of effluent from industrial sites to prevent contamination of both natural waterways and the municipal sewage system. Fluctuations in wastewater quality due to varying pollutant loads, chemical compositions and flow rates meant that many industries were struggling to comply with strict legal discharge limits. This made it extremely difficult to maintain compliance as well as optimize operations and frequently led to heavy fines and legal penalties. Consequently, the Municipality required a comprehensive solution to monitor and control industrial wastewater discharges.

One of the largest petrochemical plants in Kocaeli, turkey.

Working with the experts at Badger Meter, they were able to utilize a range of Water Quality Spectrometer Probes along with the con::cube V3 IoT Terminal to create a scalable, efficient monitoring system which would support regulatory compliance, reduce the risk of pollution events and help industries better manage wastewater treatment across the region. The Importance of COD Monitoring Within Biogas Production

Within the wastewater treatment process, biogas reactors are frequently used to reduce the amount of organic waste and produce a methane-rich gas which serves as a source of renewable energy. Through a process known as anaerobic digestion (AD), microorganisms are used to break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen. For this process to be successful, the organic load of the industrial wastewater must be carefully monitored as highly fluctuating contaminant levels can directly affect the efficiency of the microorganisms.

To maintain stable operations the monitoring of chemical oxygen demand (COD) prior to the wastewater entering the biogas reactor is vital. Excessive amounts can lead to imbalances in the anaerobic digestion process, inhibit microbial activity and reduce biogas production. Early identification of fluctuating levels of COD allows proactive management to resolve issues and maintain maximum yield.

For one brewery in Switzerland, biogas production is at the heart of their wastewater treatment operations. To safeguard their processes, they required a solution to measure COD levels at the biogas inlet. Working alongside the experts at Badger Meter, plant operators at the brewery chose to install the i::scan spectrophotometer probe. As part of the BlueEdge portfolio, this advanced solution offers simple installation and minimal maintenance while delivering real-time COD data, giving operators clear insight into the organic load to keep the plant running smoothly and increase efficiency. Improving pH Control and Regulatory Compliance in Industrial Effluents

The Royal Mint has an established international reputation as a leading manufacturer of currency, coins and commemorative collectibles for global markets. As a UK government-owned organization, it is committed to improving its manufacturing processes to minimize the environmental impact.

Industrial effluents from UK metal finishing plants, like the Royal Mint, are tightly regulated under the Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) regulations and the Water Industry Act 1991. Discharging trade effluent without consent is a criminal offense, and strict controls are in place to protect public health, the environment and sewer systems. Discharge consents aim to eliminate hazardous substances, including heavy metals and acidic or alkaline materials from wastewater.

To comply with these regulations, the coin manufacturer required an upgraded effluent monitoring system that could cope with the large amount of highly viscous effluent created within their operational processes. Working with the team from Badger Meter they installed the Q46P pH and the Q46R ORP monitors to measure pH and ORP within their effluent stream and better control their wastewater discharges. These advanced sensors, available through the BlueEdge portfolio, are designed for use within industrial and municipal applications and are specifically engineered to function in challenging environments where conventional sensors often fail. The integration of these leading-edge sensors has enabled significant improvements to operating procedures, facilitating increased productivity and reduced maintenance costs while enhancing regulatory compliance.
