A UK process filter manufacturer has appointed a top sales and procurement expert with extensive experience of biotech engineering to lead its strategy for global pharma and healthcare. Surrey-headquartered Amazon Filters has tasked Mafalda Silva with delivering a targeted international sales plan to accelerate growth while working closely with sales team colleagues, distributors, resale partners and customers.

Mafalda takes up the new role of Market Manager – Pharmaceutical & Healthcare as the 39-year-old firm accelerates a dedicated push into the two target sectors, particularly in strategic sales territories such as Italy, Singapore and North America. Based in Cascais near Lisbon, Portugal, Mafalda has a background in biotechnological engineering that began in a public health laboratory specialising in water microbiology.
After a decade in sales she spent the next eight years at an API manufacturer as a global procurement manager responsible for categories including process filtration.

Mafalda’s appointment comes amid a mix of dynamic factors impacting the deployment of filtration solutions in pharma and healthcare. They include increased regulatory compliance, technological innovation, the need for greater sustainability and a focus on more tailored solutions.

Mafalda said: “There is a growing demand for high-quality filtration solutions and advanced technologies to meet stringent regulatory standards. Nanofiltration and membrane technologies are being increasingly applied in areas such as protein purification and the removal of viruses and endotoxins. At the same time, the industry is shifting towards more environmentally friendly filtration solutions, including reusable filters and processes designed to minimise waste and energy consumption. Underpinning all this is a stronger focus on developing tailored solutions to meet specific customer needs.”

Asked about her aims in the new role, Mafalda said: “I will be co-ordinating an international initiative to ensure consistency, alignment and key messaging in our sales efforts within the pharma and healthcare sectors. I will provide support directly to sales team members and, indirectly, through our distribution partners.”

Mafalda said her introduction to Amazon Filters has been “excellent”, adding: “The colleagues are very welcoming and consistently available to assist one another. There is a genuine sense of happiness among the team members, reflecting a positive work environment. I initially encountered Amazon Filters during my sales career, where I recognised the company as a competitor. Later, in my procurement role, I identified Amazon Filters as one of my preferred suppliers. I was aware of the company’s commitment to a customer-centric approach and its focus on providing tailored solutions. I was also impressed by its innovation, skilled workforce and high service standards.”

Amazon Filters Sales Director Simon Hughes said: “Mafalda brings strong leadership skills and a proven track record of experience. She has extensive knowledge of how process filtration supports API and healthcare along with a deep understanding of global market dynamics and regulatory frameworks. We welcome her and wish her every success in what is a new role for us.”

As well as Mafalda’s appointment, Amazon Filters is engaging with senior decision makers at pharma and healthcare companies through attendance at industry events. The firm was represented at the recent CPHI conference and expo in Milan, Italy, the world’s biggest international pharma gathering. And in the UK, team members exhibit filters and housings at the annual Making Pharma showcase with the next event due in Coventry in April 2025.
