Gas blenders are devices that combine two or more gases to create a specific gas composition. They are widely used for applications including gas analyser calibration/validation, welding, food packaging and emissions monitoring.
How do gas blenders work and how can they benefit gas handling operations?
Used in various analytical applications, Chell’s CMB100 Multichannel Gas Blenders deliver highly accurate mixing and measuring of gasses.
Gas blending systems typically employ a combination of mass flow control and gas mixing technologies to achieve precise mixing ratios. At the heart of the CMB10x systems are high accuracy, digital mass flow controllers (MFCs), which regulate the flow rates of individual gases and/or pre-mixes with high precision.
Gas blenders, like Chell’s own CMB10x, play a critical role in test and calibration routines, generating accurate gas mixtures at specific concentrations.
For example, an accurate blend of varying ratios of gases (e.g. two gases in 10% steps from 0 to 100% concentrations) is produced by the blender. This can then be passed through an analyser, enabling its output to be compared to a known blend.
Gas blenders can also be a more cost-effective means of generating custom mixtures of gas components required by a particular application from individual cylinders. The alternative is buying in pre-mixed and certified cylinders for each blend required, which can be very expensive and logistically challenging.
Introducing the CMB10x Multichannel gas blender
Available with two, three or four customer-specified flow range channels for impressive gas mixing capability and range, as well as corrosive gas compatible options, the CMB10x is a standout product in Chell’s flow measurement range.
Each channel is configurable for any full scale between 5 cc/min and 20 l/min (N2 equivalent). These channels each provide 0.5% of reading mass flow accuracy as standard and has wide 200:1 control turndown. This rangeability, high-accuracy and ultra-wide control performance provides excellent blend turndown and sensitivity.
The CMB also ensures gases are fully mixed before leaving the unit, via a custom blend chamber upstream of the CMB outlet port. Furthermore, a purge function removes any residual gases remaining within the blender manifold, ensuring the purity of the next blend is never compromised.
With its high-resolution LCD front panel, intuitive menu and on-board web server, the CMB10x’s design makes configuring gas mixes simple. It also allows connection via Ethernet for performing read, control, set up and diagnostic/calibration functions via a webserver via standard web browser, or TCP command set as well as the ability to program custom pre-mixed inlet blends.
