KS2 – High-Precision Valve for Abrasive Media Suitable for Steam Applications April 21, 2020 Process and Control Valves By improving the design of the ball sector valve, Schubert & Salzer has succeeded in expanding the application limits of this valve line – for example with regard to the operating temperatures. Suitable for almost all shut-off and control tasks, ball sector valves have proven themselves particularly in applications with contaminated, abrasive and viscous media. Due to their special properties, they are used, for example, in the paper, steel, chemical, food and wastewater industries. They are characterized by their high rangeability and high flow capacity. Thanks to their especially designed ball sectors, they are also self-cleaning. Combined with electric actuators or pneumatic actuators with built-in positioners, they can be controlled precisely and in a variety of applications. Extended application limits and reduced maintenance effort With the second generation KS2 of the ball sector valves, Schubert & Salzer has further extended the application limits of an already very successful valve line. The redesigned shaft seal and seat area now enables it to be used within a temperature range of between -40°C and 220°C, so that steam applications are now possible with the ball sector valve. A clever design simplifies the replacement of wearing parts in case of repair. Maintenance effort is reduced significantly. The series, which is available in from DN 25 to DN 300, has also been expanded to include the nominal sizes DN 65 and DN 125 and was supplemented with a dihedron shaft connection for the adaption of pneumatic and electric actuators. Long service life in abrasive applications The proven advantages of the ball sector valve are retained in the new KS2 design. Ball sector valves are characterized, among other things, by their durability. The ball sector, with its centrally supported trunnions, does not lift off the valve seat during rotation. Therefore, fluids containing fibres or solids can not get between the seat ring and ball sector, where they could damage surfaces or get jammed and thus lead to leakage. Due to the special design, the seat ring also seals on a partial surface of the ball sector that is less subjected to wear and tear and offers hardly any contact surface for abrasive media when the valve is fully or partially open. The sealing surface is not exposed to high flow velocities or abrasive flow. The advantageous sealing concept, in combination with sophisticated material combinations of the seat section and surface treatments of the ball sector, significantly increases the service life of ball sector valves from Schubert & Salzer.
